The "Green" Standard

How do you define a green building? Is it the use of energy-saving equipment, recycled building materials or a high level of indoor air quality? According to the new ASHRAE Green Standard 189.1, it is how all these factors — and others — come together to create an efficient building that is also safe and productive.

Introduced earlier this year, ASHRAE Green Standard 189.1 sets minimum requirements for the design of high-performance, green commercial buildings. While Standard 189 incorporates other ASHRAE standards including Energy Standard 90.1, Ventilation Standard 62.1 and Thermal Environmental Standard 55, it applies tougher criteria to building design and operation.

Saving money and the environment

The new standard’s design requirements were set to reduce energy consumption 30 percent in comparison to Standard 90.1. Testing earlier this year by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) showed that the new standard produced a weighted average energy savings of 29.7 percent.

Reducing energy usage not only conserves natural resources but can also reduce a building’s operational costs. With ASHRAE’s estimates that buildings in the United States are responsible for 40 percent of the country’s energy consumption, 39 percent of CO2 emissions and 15 percent of the GDP each year, green building provides significant economic and environmental opportunities.
