Because the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building certification program’s greatest asset is its consensus-based, transparent and ongoing development cycle, the program is constantly evolving. To that end, the U.S. Green Building Council launched LEED v3 (version 3) on April 27, 2009. This program builds upon the strength of previous LEED standards while also prioritizing energy efficiency and CO2 emissions reductions and taking advantage of new technologies and advancements in building science.
LEED® certification has become an essential component of sustainable design in the building and construction industry. It ensures that a building project is environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to live and work. HVAC is one of the best areas in which to gather LEED points, with a number of available credit opportunities to achieve the highest LEED level of designation.
Under LEED v3, project certification now moves to the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), and independent non-profit organization established with the support of USGBC in 2007. This improved, ISO-compliant process is created to adapt and grow with the green building movement.
The LEED Green Building Rating System™ is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. USGBC will continue to administer the development and ongoing improvement of the LEED rating system. It will also remain your primary source for LEED and green building education, including workshops, online training, reference guides and other tools to help you achieve success.
LEED Accredited Professionals are industry professionals who have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building practices and principles and familiarity with LEED requirements, resources and processes. LEED professional Credentials and Exams are administered by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI).
